1-year minecraft world tour

a week ago, on october 21st 2024, was the anniversary of a minecraft server I play on with friends (though, friends plural might be a bit of an overstatement - my partner and I are the only ones who play regularly). weve had several servers in the past, but due to a lack of backups and lack of interest they tended to fade out after a while. not to mention Id always wanted to play on a modded server, but the host we were using at the time, aternos, had weird, unexplained issues whenever we tried to install mods. eventually I managed to find a different host, and though there were difficulties, we now have a modded server, which has captured our interest far more consistently. the most important ones to note are the origins mod and alex's mobs, but you can find the full modlist below.

(optional) rant about our setup

the server host we settled on was falix, and to be blunt, if it didnt offer free modded hosting I would never ever use it. to use the site you are forced to turn off adblock, and the ads fill up 80% of the screen and the site itself is the slowest, laggiest piece of shit Ive ever encountered. to play you have to continually add to a timer (you can have up to 3 hours at a time) and sometimes it just. doesnt send you the reminder for it in time!

not to mention that setting up the server in the first place was a grueling fucking task. first, to make sure that all the mods even worked with each other, I relaunched the game each time I added one (and its dependencies) and worked out any clashing stuff. by the end, I had a modpack that should have no issues. so now all I had to do was select our correct forge version for the server and port them over, right? right?

well, to start, it didnt have the right forge version. it only offered a single one per minecraft version. not a great sign, but, whatever. guess Ill just copy our forge file over easy-peasy. except it didnt do that. see, for some godforsaken reason it can only copy like 1 or 2 layers of folders. and forge has many, many folders-in-folders-in-folders. meaning I had to go in an copy every single file and folder individually. it took me. 5. HOURS. luckily the mods themselves presented no such issues. but I am sure as hell never updating that server.

meet the players!

we start, of course, with spawn. to the right you can see the platform built at 0,0 along with its nether portal and a water tube for merlings. the place in the ravine is our starter base, which is pretty empty and unused now, save for the goats we keep in there until we make a proper pen for them.

the mountain with all the bamboo and bridges and structures on it is mithrandir (though the name also applies to the whole spawn area), a name J suggested. our main base is built directly into the mountain, and most of our important stuff like storage, farms, and animal pens are around here.

the two glass towers are where we grow all our crops - aside from those that grow on trees, which we instead planted on the eastern mountain. the map shows the layout of the area.

here are the axolotl and catfish aquariums, as well as the sniffer valley. the sniffers kept escaping somehow, but I think Ive managed to patch their escape route.

a glimpse into the underground of our world. J likes stripmining and has one tunnel thats around 11000 blocks long. theres an ancient city somewhere in there but I am sure as hell not going all that way before Ive made nether highways.

───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────

this is a tour of our base, from top to bottom. directly below the peak of the mountain is the bedroom (the magenta bed is mine, the green one is Js).

all the paintings were made by me, I make them both for fun and as historical records of certain events. the eyeball was the first thing I painted and it marks the day I made finished my color palette (2023-12-14, or in-game day 796). the bloody painting on the floor followed soon after, and was just fun - intended to look like the painter got killed in the middle of making it.

the kitchen was made by J, and I think it looks really nice and cozy <3. the living room is where we keep most of our pets. the paintings on the wall document the construction of the skyways, which will come up later.

the small library is where we keep a selection of fanfics and other short stories. or would, if we ever got around to actually copying them into the game. right below it is terrapin pit A. its the first of six, because I might have gotten a little bit obsessed with terrapins.

these tunnels connect the mithrandir base, the storage room, the axolotl aquarium, the ravine, and the waterways, which I will also get into later.

speaking of which, heres the communal storage! I made it very big, and a third or so of the chests havent even been assigned categories yet. the map of the immediate area was a fairly recent addition, but I think it turned out rather well!

to the north of mithrandir is Vs base. bit empty for now, but I think considering that theyve only been online like once or twice, it looks quite good!

the eastern bridge leads to what will be Ls base, if she ever deigns to join us again /silly. for now all thats there is the orchard and our pet cemetary.

the waterways are one of three transportation systems we have, consisting of water-filled tunnels and buoy-marked paths. they were inspired by the canal system on the ma pona pi toki pona minecraft server.

currently the waterway system only connects places in asowi, our home continent. but I have plans to extend it to cheprriu, which lies to the south.

the spider farm at the end of W03, and the zombie farm at the end of W04. neither is particularly interesting.

the southern gravel quarry, almost directly above the spider farm. this is the site of one of Js hobbies: digging gravel. just obscene amounts of gravel. layer by layer. nine double chests of our storage room are dedicated to gravel and it Will Not Be Enough.

at the end of W01, which leads to conifer sea, is terrapin pit B (left). a bit further out is pit C (right).

───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────

the railway system has comparatively few destinations, since it uses an automatic routing system that makes it somewhat tedious to expand. still, there is something satisfying about watching all the rail switches click into place.

again, only asowi has any of these, since cheprriu only has like one or two locations of interest so far.

this is honeyport, the first village we found. its also where we first found bees, hence the name. we havent spent as much time here as in alexandria, but we plan to have all kinds of villagers here - except, perhaps, librarians.

past the southern gate lies the arena, which is still a work in progress. while you could of course fight with regular weapons in there, its actually intended for pebblefighting. because we have so, so many pebbles and need some way to use them up.

theres also a terrapin pit a little ways upstream, pit D. I didnt really build this one, I just put a door on a small cave and called it a day. its the second most populous one, sitting at around 50 terrapins by my last census (which I do every month)

this is alexandria, and its where all our librarians are. the large domed building is the library, where our enchanted books are kept. yes, all of them. you know what they say: always put all your eggs in one basket. you know, for efficiency.

seriously though, this village was my personal project for a while, and Im pretty happy with how it turned out!

further east from alexandria the northern gravel quarry. its unused as of yet, but once J is done with the southern one, that will change.

finally, there are the gardens! they exist pretty much entirely for aesthetic purposes, though the base at cavegarden also houses my journal, which I use as a historical record.

pictured here is goldgarden, the idea for which I got after seeing this absolutely gorgeous autumnal biome. theres also a bison that just kinda hangs around here, though I havent come up with a name for her yet.

cavegarden started entirely because I saw those sick ass naturally generated dirt bridges and decided I absolutely Must build something there. pictured here is, among other things, my writing desk.

the third mode of transportation we have is the skyway, which is really just a railway but in the sky, so it gets a different name. theyre meant for long-distance transportation, so we dont have a lot of them, since they take a while to build. not to mention that we dont have a lot of builds that far out.

first up is splendens, the second largest of the weird islands (yes, that is their name), which is the most notable island group of the antaleic ocean. the specific point where the skyway touches down is rainbow coast, so named after the trees that grow there. and the mushroom house? why, thats third base of course. just its number :3

I havent spent an awful lot of time here, but I do have some pets here, such as mildred the brown mooshroom and my two bunfungi.

down by the shore is terrapin pit F, the most recently built one. its not particularly big, mostly just meant to take some strain off of pit D and E. since it was only built a couple weeks ago, it hasnt yet been included in the monthly census.

next up is subaquatic station 01 (there is only one so far). it sits at the end of skyway S03, which branches off from S01. the station design is heavily inspired by the railways on the ma pona pi toki pona server.

the station consist of three domes, each with two floors. I havent really gotten around to doing much interior design yet. theres also a geode not too far below the station, earning its terrapin pit (pit E, because of course it has one) the name "crystal cove"

skyway S01 is the longest one at over 4000 blocks diagonally. a lot of it just goes over the writhing ocean, but theres some sights to see here and there.

and here we are, at the furthest important point of the map. mantis swamp. while I built the skyway to get there, and occasionally take some of the tropical fish, this place was really Js project.

xe spent a lot of time building out all these houses and bridges, furnishing everything, all the little details, and I dont know what to say other than that it looks fantastic.

its meant as a sort of vacation spot, to go and hang out with friends in a different environment for a bit. of course, that would work better if there were more than two people online at any given moment. but it still has a nice atmosphere.

I plan to make a waterway connecting this place and subaq station 01 at some point. but for now, there are many other projects to hold my attention.

───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────

and that concludes my tour of our little minecraft server! Ill definitely be doing another one next year, I have so many ideas for projects (and something currently in progress that I didnt want to show yet). not to mention J and I found something cool not too long ago... I guess youll just have to wait and see, huh?
